課程概述

*Please see English version for most up to date description and schedule*

This course is primarily designed for undergraduate students who want to improve their English presentation language and techniques, and to gain more experience in delivering presentations that can be both academic or popular in style.

In this course, we will cover basic principles and skills that can be applied to just about any type of presentation. From an academic research presentation, to a motivational or persuasive speech to your peers, the principles and skills covered are universals. These principles and skills include things such as attitude, connection, performance, engagement, and persuasion.

A large part of this course will also be dedicated to the process of designing and preparing for a presentation. Working in groups, you will get feedback and advice from your peers as you work together in preparing your own presentations.

Through knowledge and understanding and principles and skills, as well as through the process of designing and preparing presentations, no matter what your English proficiency level, or past experiences, you will emerge from this class as a stronger and more effective presenter.

課程目標
Course Content
‧ The Basics of Presentational Success: Attitude & Connection
‧ Voice techniques for speakers
‧ Developing strong, professional introductions and conclusions
‧ Describing, Comparing, Demonstrating, Persuading
‧ Describing and commenting on data

By the end of the course, you should be able to:
‧ Know how to create the most commonly used elements of a presentation.
‧ Present more confidently by improving your presentational vocabulary range
‧ Apply voice techniques to your presentations to enhance your communication and be more persuasive.

Assignments
‧ Create and deliver a professional self-introduction
‧ Create and deliver an effective conclusion to any presentation.
‧ Create and deliver four presentations demonstrating the following functions: Self Introduction, Describing, Demonstrating, and Persuading.

Feedback Process
All presentations will be presented in groups. You will receive peer feedback in your group. Additional feedback will be given by the instructor and TA throughout the semester. Because of the large size of the class, the instructor will not be able to personal grade and give feedback on every presentation. However, at least one of your major presentations will be graded directly by the instructor. You also have the option of having the instructor grade and give feedback on your other presentations, however this is optional. Some presenters may be asked to present in front of the whole class. Be prepared!

Homework Policy
‧ All assignments are due by the due date.
‧ All paper assignments should be submitted in MS Word files unless otherwise stated.
‧ Your name and ID number must be on every assignment.
‧ Every assignment must also be double spaced.
‧ Late assignments will not be accepted

Expectations
1. Attendance on enrollment day is mandatory for this class. If you do not attend on the first day your place will be given away.

2. Lectures and materials are presented in English. You will need to have a confident level of English to successfully participate in this course.

3. Group discussions, however, can be conducted in any language.

4. This course is specifically designed to students who have not yet begun a research project, such as undergraduates. This course especially welcomes undergraduates from any discipline. Graduate students who possess a low level of English will be considered for this course. No auditors allowed.

5. Attendance is required and will be taken on most days. Being absent four times or more in a single term may cause one to fail this course. After the 3rd absence, your grade will be reduced by 1 letter grade for each additional absence. (Example: B+  C+)

6. Students are expected to arrive to class on time and to leave only after the end of class. Students who arrive late or leave early may have their final course grade reduced

7. Attendance will be taken approximately 10 minutes after class/tutorial begins. If you are late, speak to the TA for your attendance to be recorded. If you arrive 20 minutes after class/tutorial begins, you will be considered absent.

Academic Honesty
1. All work that you submit and present must be original. What this means is that all work for this class must be written and created by you. Plagiarism is unacceptable. While you may refer to outside references, you cannot submit other people’s work as your own. If you are found to have dishonestly presented another person’s work as your own in this course, you will receive a failing grade for that assignment (with no opportunity to make up the assignment), or a failing grade for the course. This is up to the instructor’s discretion

2. Plagiarism in this course is defined as using material/content written/created by other people and presenting it as your own. While there is a wide range of possibilities as to what constitutes plagiarism, below are some examples of plagiarism in the context of this course:

a. Using a presentation script that was created by someone else

b. Delivering a presentation that was created by someone else (such as a TED or TEDx presentation, or a presentation on youtube etc..)

c. Turning in written assignments
